The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports, headed by Rajya Sabha MP Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, has made several important suggestions to improve the education of performing and fine arts. The committee has said in its suggestions that in the new National Education Policy 2020, emphasis has been laid on linking arts with education. Therefore, subjects like music, dance, visual arts and theater should be made compulsory in school education. Art education should be made a compulsory subject till class 10th. Music, dance, visual arts and theater should be taught to the students under this subject. Infrastructure and facilities should also be provided in every school so that students can learn it in a better way.
The report, tabled in Parliament on 7 February, said subjects of art education should include Indian traditions in the form of folk tales, stories, plays, paintings, etc. So that the student can take interest in this study. At the same time, there is a need for radical changes to overcome the colonial thinking about art education in the country. The committee has suggested consultations with bodies like National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) and various university departments to work on framing curriculum of art education.

Referring to the existing institutions playing a leading role in art education in the country, the committee has said that the Government should provide Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune, National School of Drama (NSD) New Delhi, All India Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mumbai and Institutions like Sir JJ School of Art, Mumbai should be considered for the status of Institutions of National Importance. Recognition will help these reputed institutions to expand their work and their vision, and the importance of their education and certifications will also increase.
