SIR took place just before the elections in West Bengal. Mamta Banerjee and her party TMC had raised many objections regarding this. This matter also reached the Supreme Court and a long hearing took place. Now that the results have come, some TMC supporters and leaders say that BJP has got this victory because of SIR and EVM. There are 49 such seats in Bengal, where the margin of victory or defeat of the candidates is less than the number of voters deleted in SIR. Based on this, questions are being raised on SIR. But when the complete data is studied, a different figure emerges. In fact, BJP has won on 26 such seats where the number of deleted voters is less than the margin of victory. TMC has also won 21 seats. Similarly, the situation is similar in the two seats where Congress has won. Therefore, it would probably not be right to say that BJP has directly benefited from SIR. There is a big difference in the seat numbers of both.
In such a situation, if we look at the average of the total seats of both and then the seats with deleted names in SIR, then TMC seems to be in advantage. BJP has got a total of 207 seats and out of these, about 13 percent seats are such where so many votes were lost in SIR that the margin of victory is also less than that. A total of 21 seats went to TMC’s account and this is equal to 25 percent of the seats it won. In this way, it has to be understood that even though the names deleted in SIR had an impact on the elections on some seats, there was anti-incumbency in Bengal on a large scale. Its effect has also been directly seen in the elections.
Muslim majority seats also breached, Congress also got benefit
The point about anti-incumbency also seems true because TMC, which gets a large section of Muslim votes, has suffered a setback here this time too. Even though TMC has won most of the Muslim dominated seats, this vote is also divided. This is the reason why both the winning candidates of Congress are Muslims. Apart from this, on the only seat where the Left has won, only the Muslim candidate has reached the Assembly. Apart from this, BJP has secured 14 assembly seats from districts like Malda and Murshidabad. In such a situation, the effect of SIR has become the reason for TMC’s defeat. It doesn’t seem right to say this.
