In the early sixties, Dev Anand, the evergreen actor of Hindustani cinema, was enthusiastically engaged in the production of his film “Hum Doon” under the banner of his production house “Navketan Films”. In this connection, when it came to composing the songs and music of the film, it was clear in Dev Anand’s mind that the film should be a brilliant display of words and tunes.
Dev Anand was a music lover at heart. He took special interest in the process of composing songs and music for each of his films. When music sittings went on in the studio for hours, Dev Anand would remain involved and convey his thoughts to the composer. The songs and music that were created after this entire process had a different kind of magic, a life in them.
Due to his interest in songs and music, Dev Anand handed over the responsibility of music direction of the film to composer Jaidev and the responsibility of song writing to Sahir Ludhyanvi. Sahir had worked in Dev Anand’s films even before this. Sahir Ludhyanvi got his big break in the Indian film industry from Dev Anand’s film “Baazi” (1951). While working together, Dev Anand and Sahir Ludhianvi developed a close bond. Both were progressing in their respective fields.
While the process of song-music making was going on, one day Dev Anand came to meet Sahir Ludhyanvi. Dev Anand was looking very excited and thrilled. Sahir asked Dev Anand the reason for his enthusiasm. Dev Anand told Sahir that the fragrance of Pakistan’s famous poet Hafeez Jalandhari’s poem “Abhi To Main Jawan Hoon” is imprinted on his mind and heart. The more he listens to this poem, the more he gets lost. There is a different charm in this poem.
Dev Anand asked Sahir to write a song on similar lines and meter for the film “Hum Dono”. Sahir and Dev Anand were very good friends. So Sahir accepted Dev Anand’s words and started fulfilling his wish. One thing to be kept in mind here is that Hafeez Jalandhari was born in India in 1900 and went to Pakistan at the time of partition. Apart from this, Hafeez Jalandhari is the only person who has written the national anthem of Pakistan.
Sahir Ludhyanvi’s hard work paid off. Sahir wrote the song for the film “Hum Dono” keeping in mind the meter of Hafeez Jalandhari’s poem “Abhi To Main Jawan Hoon”. Composer Jaidev set the song to tune. This wonderful song was sung by the great singer Mohammad Rafi and singer Asha Bhosle. The song that was created with this effort, dedication and dedication is still beating with freshness in the heart of every music lover even after many decades have passed. The lyrics of the immortal song written by Sahir Ludhyanavi on the meter of Hafeez Jalandhari’s poem “Abhi to main jawan ho” were
“Don’t leave now because your heart is not full yet.”
