Afghanistan is the fifth most affected country in the world due to food crisis: report

Kabul, April 26 (IANS). Afghanistan has been ranked fifth among the countries most affected by hunger in the world. This information has been given in the report quoted by local media on Sunday.

According to the ‘Global Food Crisis 2026’ report released by United Nations agencies, the European Union and other partners, 1.74 crore people in Afghanistan, i.e. about 36 percent of the country’s population, are facing severe food crisis. Of these, 47 lakh people are in conditions that are very serious, that is, they are living in emergency or almost famine-like conditions. In this list, the countries where the hunger situation is worse than Afghanistan include Congo, Nigeria, Sudan and Yemen. This report was given by Afghan news agency Khaama Press.

Around the world, approximately 266 million people in 47 countries were facing severe food insecurity by 2025. This number is almost double that of 2016.

The report said that hunger is no longer a temporary problem, but it has become a major global problem.

The main causes of this situation include disasters related to war, economic instability and climate change. These problems are especially affecting poor and distressed countries.

The humanitarian crisis has deepened due to continued economic decline, unemployment, drought and reduced international aid. Due to this, lakhs of people have become dependent only on food aid.

Aid agencies say the hunger situation could worsen if Afghanistan does not receive continued aid and access. This can have a long-term adverse impact on children, livelihoods and the stability of the country.

On March 4, the World Food Program (WFP) said that Afghanistan is facing one of the world’s most serious hunger crises. In the same report, WFP reported that malnutrition is increasing rapidly in Afghanistan and thousands of children are at grave risk.

WFP said vulnerable communities are finding it difficult to access health services and aid due to the conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The agency warned that if the fighting between the two countries continues, already poor and hungry families could get into more serious trouble.
