New Delhi, October 21 (IANS). After Diwali, the air of Delhi-NCR has once again deteriorated. The increasing level of pollution is directly impacting the health of the people. IANS had a special conversation on this issue with Professor Dr. M. Wali, Senior Consultant, Department of Medicine, Sir Gangaram Hospital. He expressed concern and said that we have to find an alternative to firecrackers.
Dr. Wali said that every year during Diwali, air pollution increases rapidly. This time, even though burning of green crackers was allowed, there was no significant improvement in air quality. I think now some alternative to firecrackers will have to be found, so that people do not face problems due to the smoke and gases emanating from them. Change will come not just by making rules, but only by people’s awareness.
He said that around and after Diwali, the number of patients in hospitals with complaints like difficulty in breathing, sore throat, fever, cold and burning sensation in the eyes increases rapidly. For the last few days, people of all ages have been coming to me, some have pain in the throat, some have difficulty in breathing, some have pain in the chest, and some have constant watering of eyes.
He also said that patients suffering from chronic diseases like diabetes, heart disease and asthma are affected the most. Due to pollution, problems like shortness of breath, risk of heart attack and fatigue become common in these patients. Remain vigilant until air quality improves. People should go out of the house less these days. If it is necessary to go out then wear a mask. Drink lukewarm water, take steam, gargle and avoid fried foods.
He advised people who do morning walk or outdoor exercise to avoid it for a few days. The level of pollution in the air is highest in the morning, so going out at that time can be dangerous for health.
