New Delhi, January 1 (IANS). Sciatica is a common but painful problem that starts from the lower back and causes severe pain in the hip, thigh and leg. This occurs due to compression or swelling of the largest nerve of the body i.e. the sciatic nerve. It is a matter of relief that this problem can be overcome with yoga.
Symptoms of sciatica may include numbness, tingling, or weakness in the leg in addition to severe pain. In most cases, this is due to herniated disc (slipped disc) or formation of spurs in the bones. The good thing is that this problem can be controlled or cured to a great extent by rest, physiotherapy and yoga practice.
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, daily practice of Dhanurasana or Bow Pose is effective in sciatica. According to the ministry, Dhanurasana is not just an exercise but a panacea for many physical problems. This asana especially provides relief from problems like back pain, sciatica and slip disc. Its regular practice reduces pressure on the sciatic nerve, strengthens the spine and provides relief from pain.
According to experts, Dhanurasana is also extremely beneficial in digestive problems like constipation, indigestion and gas, as it stimulates the organs by putting pressure on the abdominal muscles. Other benefits of Dhanurasana are also no less. It strengthens the muscles of the back, shoulders and chest, which improves posture and relieves back pain. Tones the abdominal muscles, which helps in reducing belly fat. Increases lung capacity, provides relief from respiratory problems like asthma. Removes stress and fatigue and increases energy level.
Not only this, it is helpful in reducing menstrual irregularities and pain in women. Overall, it increases the flexibility of the entire body and improves overall health.
To do Dhanurasana, lie down on your stomach, hold the heels of your feet with your hands and raise your chest and thighs, bend the body like a bow. Initially hold for 10-20 seconds and gradually increase. But pregnant women, people with high blood pressure or serious back problems should practice only after consulting a doctor or yoga expert.
