New Delhi, October 12 (IANS). Banana is not only the cheapest and easily available fruit, but it is also called a powerhouse of energy. In both Ayurveda and modern nutrition science, banana is considered to be an excellent energy source and body strengthening fruit.
If a banana is eaten before going to the gym or after exercise, it provides instant energy to the body and provides relief from fatigue. The natural carbohydrates glucose, fructose and sucrose present in bananas fill the body with instant energy and supply glycogen to the muscles. This is why banana is a natural and safe energy fuel compared to any chemical energy drink.
During workout, minerals like potassium and sodium are released from the body along with sweat, which can cause muscle strain or cramps. Banana is an excellent source of potassium. One banana contains about 450 mg of potassium, which helps maintain electrolyte balance and prevent muscle cramps.
Moreover, banana keeps the blood sugar level stable as the sugar present in it is released slowly. This prevents sudden energy fluctuations and the body remains stable throughout the workout session.
An amino acid called tryptophan found in banana produces serotonin in the brain, which improves mood and reduces stress. This is why after eating banana a person feels mentally light and energetic.
Even in Ayurveda, banana has been described as a fruit that gives strength and stability. Sweet juice, cold semen and Guru qualities are found in it, which calms Vata and Pitta dosha.
It is considered very good to consume 1 banana and 4-5 almonds or 1 teaspoon peanut butter before workout. At the same time, drinking banana milk or curd smoothie after workout is beneficial. However, banana should not be eaten on an empty stomach. It is better to take it with a light meal or milk, oats or shake.
