New Delhi, December 28 (IANS). You meet someone, the conversation goes very well, but the next moment his/her name becomes vague and then you start cursing yourself for how weak your memory has become. Now give up the habit of blaming yourself.

According to celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija, forgetting names is not a weakness of memory or brain fog, but it is a clever strategy of the brain. Our brains are always determining what’s most important right now, and in most cases, emotions, meaning and understanding outweigh simple labels like names.

He told that forgetting the name is not a weakness of memory or brain fog, but it is a smart functioning of the brain. People often mistake name forgetting for inattention or poor memory, but it’s actually a way for two important parts of the brain to prioritize information—the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex.

Many researches have also been done on this. According to research, emotionally significant information is deeply recorded in the brain, while neutral labels such as simple names are poorly remembered. In conversation, social cognition often dominates the memory of words. The mind constantly asks the question, what matters most right now? And in most cases the meaning or sentiment wins out over the label. That’s why people remember the gist, feeling and understanding of the conversation very well, but forget the name.

He clarified that this is not brain fog, nor weak memory nor any lack of character. This is simply neural efficiency, that is, efficient functioning of the brain. He appealed to people to stop making normal mindless behavior a cause for embarrassment.
