New Delhi, July 2 (IANS). Grapefruit, which is called Citrus Maxima in scientific language, is considered to be the largest and special fruit in the category of citrus fruits. It is also called pomelo in English. The bigger this fruit is, the more beneficial it is for health. Due to its special texture, juicy pulp and nutrients, it is also called the ‘king of citrus fruits’.

Grapefruit is an evergreen tree and can usually grow 5 to 15 meters tall. Its leaves are green and shiny and it also bears fragrant flowers, which are used in making perfumes. Its fruit is very large in size and sometimes its weight even reaches 2 kg. This fruit is round or pear shaped and when ripe its color can be yellow, orange or light red.

The peel of grapefruit is very thick and spongy, peeling it is a bit laborious, but the inside is very juicy and tasty. Its pulp is in large pieces, which gives a slightly sweet and slightly sour taste. Slight bitterness may also be felt in some varieties.

Grapefruit is no less than a boon in terms of nutrition. Vitamin C is found in abundance in it, which strengthens the body’s immunity and increases its ability to fight diseases. Apart from this, it also contains good amount of fiber, which helps in keeping the digestive system healthy. The antioxidants present in it are helpful in keeping the body clean from inside and protecting the cells from damage.

Grapefruit has also been used in traditional medicine. People consider it beneficial in cough, fever and stomach problems. It is eaten as a fresh fruit and its juice is also very much liked.
