New Delhi, April 4 (IANS). In today’s fast-paced lifestyle, most of our time is spent sitting in the office or on a chair. It is common for this to cause tension and pain in the spine, waist and back muscles. In such a situation, Paschimottanasana provides many benefits to the body.

This asana is included in the basic postures of Hatha Yoga. It is also called ‘Seated Forward Bend’ or ‘Paschim Uttasana’. It is a Sanskrit word, ‘Paschim’ meaning ‘back part of the body’ and ‘Uttan’ meaning ‘deep stretch’ or intense extension and ‘Asana’ meaning ‘posture’. That is, this asana deeply stretches the back part of the body.

According to Hatha Yoga Pradipika, Paschimottanasana is a major asana, considered one of the ‘best of asanas’ and is counted among the 12 basic asanas of Hatha Yoga. This asana gives good stretch to the back and legs and strengthens the digestive system. Not only this, it also reduces belly fat.

According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend) is an extremely beneficial yoga asana for diabetes, sciatica and obesity, which is especially beneficial for senior citizens. It stimulates the abdominal organs, makes the spine flexible and helps in reducing mental stress and anxiety.

It is very important to know the correct method before doing Paschimottanasana. Do not put too much stress on the body while doing this, especially when you are starting it. To do this asana, first sit on the ground with your legs straight. Then take a deep breath and slowly bend the body forward. According to your capacity, touch the feet with hands and touch the head or nose with the knees. Stay like this for a while, then slowly straighten back up.

Initially, do not put too much pressure on the body to do this asana. By practicing yoga daily the body will start opening up. If you have stomach ulcer, diarrhea or recent stomach surgery, do not do this asana or do it only on the advice of any expert.
