New Delhi, February 4 (IANS). Pregnancy is the most special and sensitive time in any woman’s life. During this period, proper care not only keeps the mother healthy, but also plays an important role in the good development and safe delivery of the child. This care is called antenatal care or prenatal care. Its purpose is not only to prevent diseases, but also to provide a positive pregnancy experience, so that the mother remains strong both physically and mentally.
Antenatal care should start from the initial months of pregnancy. As soon as pregnancy is confirmed, it is necessary to register at the nearest health center or hospital. After this, one should keep getting checked by a doctor or health worker from time to time. By regular checkups, any problems related to the mother’s weight, blood pressure, anemia, sugar and urine can be detected in time, due to which complications can be avoided.
Proper eating habits are very important for a healthy pregnancy. A balanced diet should be taken daily, which includes pulses, green vegetables, fruits, milk and grains. It is very important to take iron and folic acid tablets daily as per doctor’s advice, because it prevents anemia and helps in the mental development of the child. Consumption of caffeine i.e. tea and coffee should be reduced and one should completely stay away from things like tobacco and alcohol.
It is common to think that one should take rest during pregnancy, but it is not so. Light daily activities like walking or doing simple household chores are beneficial. However, lifting heavy objects, tiring work and excessive exercise should be avoided. Also, no medicine should be taken without doctor’s advice, because some medicines can be harmful for the child.
Mental health is as important as physical health. It is normal to have mood swings, anxiety or fear due to hormonal changes during pregnancy. In such a situation, family support, open conversation and proper counseling helps a lot. Nutrition counseling and information related to childbirth preparation give the mother confidence and reduce the fear of delivery.
An important part of antenatal care is adopting the right diet and care for each month. As pregnancy progresses, the body’s needs change. Therefore, light, nutritious and easily digestible food should be taken. It is better to reduce spicy and very fried food.
