New Delhi, November 9 (IANS). Isabgol is considered very beneficial in Ayurveda. It is the husk of the seeds of a plant called Plantago ovata. People often use it for stomach related problems, but its benefits are not limited to digestion only.
First of all let’s talk about its benefits. Isabgol contains very high amount of fiber, hence it strengthens the digestive system. If someone has the problem of constipation, then regular consumption of Isabgol makes bowel movement easier and cleanses the stomach properly. Consuming it mixed with curd or water also provides relief from diarrhea.
It is also beneficial for heart health, because the fiber present in it helps in removing bad cholesterol from the body. This reduces the risk of heart related diseases. It is also useful for diabetic patients.
Isabgol is no less than a boon for those who want to lose weight. Taking it in the morning on an empty stomach with water or lemonade prevents hunger for a long time, thereby avoiding overeating. It helps in removing toxins from the body, which also keeps the liver healthy.
It also has benefits for skin and hair. It cleanses the body from inside, which brings glow to the skin and reduces acne. It maintains moisture in the body, which also helps in the problem of dandruff and hair fall.
Isabgol is also beneficial in piles and gas problems. It softens the stool, thereby providing relief from pain and swelling. If you have acidity problem, consuming it with milk provides relief.
Although it is considered safe, if it is consumed in excessive amounts it can cause problems like flatulence, gas or cramps. Not drinking enough water can dry up the intestines and increase constipation. Therefore one should always drink plenty of water along with it.
Pregnant women or those who are allergic to any medicine should consume it after consulting a doctor.
