Keep yourself safe in the scorching heat, youth should adopt these health tips to protect themselves from heatwave.

New Delhi, June 4 (IANS). Severe heat and heatwave continues in many parts of the country. People are facing health related problems due to rising temperature and strong sunlight. In such a situation, the youth need to be especially alert and take care of their health.

The National Health Mission (NHM) has warned the youth to protect themselves from heatwave especially as they can be most affected this summer due to busy routines and outdoor activities. Many important health tips have been given, following which the harm caused by heat can be avoided.

According to NHM, the most important thing is to keep yourself hydrated. While going out, keep a water bottle with you and keep drinking water frequently by taking small sips. Apart from plain water, also consume lemon water, coconut water or fresh fruit juice. Avoid energy drinks as they can further dehydrate the body.

Cover your head and face properly while going out in the sun. Use a cloth scarf, hat or umbrella. To protect your eyes, wear UV protection glasses. Avoid unnecessary outdoor activities like sports, running or long journeys in bright sunlight between 12 noon to 4 pm. If it is necessary to go out, then wear light colored, loose and cotton clothes which can absorb sweat.

Monitor your body’s signals during a heatwave. If symptoms like dizziness, extreme fatigue, feeling like vomiting, headache or lack of sweating appear, then immediately rest in a cool place and contact a doctor. Don’t ignore yourself when you feel heat stroke.

According to health experts, youth should start the day with light exercise but limit it to cool morning hours. Get good sleep at night and eat nutritious food which includes high water content like melon, cucumber, watermelon.
