Mumbai, June 21 (IANS). Maharashtra Governor Jishnudev Verma performed yoga with senior Indian Coast Guard officers on International Yoga Day at Lok Bhavan in Mumbai on Sunday.
This year International Yoga Day was organized at Lok Bhavan in collaboration with Indian Coast Guard. Officers and personnel of the Indian Coast Guard, their family members and officials of Lok Bhavan attended the programme.
Addressing the people present here, the Governor appealed to all the universities of Maharashtra to promote yoga on a large scale and prepare yoga tutors and trainers for the world. Appreciating the global recognition that Yoga has received, the Governor said that for centuries Yoga has been practiced mostly in homes, ashrams and special institutions. A historic turn in this direction came when Prime Minister Narendra Modi appealed to the United Nations to declare June 21 as International Yoga Day. This initiative received a lot of support at the international level, due to which a resolution regarding International Yoga Day was passed in the UN with the help of a record number of member countries.
Governor Jishnudev Verma appreciated the stupendous contribution of the Indian Coast Guard to the country since its inception in 1977. Congratulating the Force on the milestone of completing 50 years of its establishment, he said that the nation looks back with great pride at its glorious journey of dedication, professionalism and selfless service to the nation.
The Indian Coast Guard has emerged as an essential pillar of India’s maritime security architecture through numerous operations and constant surveillance. Maharashtra with its large coastline, busy ports and strategic maritime interests has greatly benefited from the commitment of the Coast Guard.
He said the force has played an important role in ensuring safety of life at sea, protecting fishermen and sailors, preventing illegal activities and maintaining security along our coastline.
