Oil pulling is a thousands-year-old technique in Ayurveda; Not just for teeth, but also good for gut health

New Delhi, February 22 (IANS). In today’s fast-paced life, people are ignoring their health, due to which many types of diseases start affecting the body at an early age. In this context, people have now started adopting Ayurvedic measures.

One of the Ayurveda remedies is oil pulling, which is called ‘Kavala’ or ‘Gandusha’ in Ayurveda. This is thousands of years old technology. Its purpose is to remove the bad bacteria present in the mouth and keep the teeth, gums, tongue and throat healthy. If it is made a part of everyday routine, it keeps the mouth and stomach healthy.

According to the National Library of Medicine, mouth and gut health are directly related to the health of the entire body. Whatever we eat, it first enters the body through the mouth. If there is dirt, bacteria or infection in the mouth, it affects the stomach, digestion and gradually the entire body. Harmful bacteria present in the mouth can become the root of many serious diseases. This can cause tooth decay, swollen gums, bad breath and problems related to salivation. Apart from this, these bacteria can also harm the digestive system by reaching the stomach with food. Oil pulling works on this problem.

During oil pulling, when oil is swished around in the mouth, the sticky nature of the oil attracts bad bacteria. After some time, these bacteria get trapped in the oil and come out after rinsing. This is why regular oil pulling keeps teeth, gums, tongue and throat clean and healthy. This reduces bad breath, reduces swelling of gums and can also reduce the problem of cavity in teeth.

The method of oil pulling is very easy. Take a tablespoon of oil, put it in your mouth and gargle slowly like water. This should be done for 15 minutes. During this period the oil should not be swallowed at all. When the oil becomes thin and white like milk, spit it out and clean the mouth thoroughly with lukewarm water. It is considered best to do it in the morning on an empty stomach, because the body and mouth are most receptive at that time.

Coconut oil, sesame oil, or sunflower oil can be used for oil pulling. Among these, coconut and sesame oil are considered to be the most beneficial. However, if someone has serious dental problems, mouth sores, or a white coating starts appearing on the tongue after oil pulling, then it should be stopped immediately.
