Pakistan: Former PM Imran Khan's eyes were treated in government hospital, PTI again raised questions

Islamabad, April 28 (IANS). Pakistan-Tehreek-e-Insaf founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s eyes were treated for the fourth time in a government hospital. He was injected in the eyes. Local media gave this information quoting the hospital. While repeating the old questions, his party raised the issue of violation of fundamental rights.

Former Wazir-e-Azam (Prime Minister) Imran Khan received his fourth intravitreal anti-VEGF injection at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) and was discharged on Tuesday morning, a hospital spokesperson said, according to Pakistani daily Dawn.

Imran was given the third injection on 23 March. His right eye disease – central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) – was diagnosed in late January. The first medical procedure was completed on January 24, and he was given the second dose on February 24.

According to PIMS spokesperson, 74-year-old Imran was brought to the hospital on April 28.

“Prior to the procedure, eye specialists examined him and found him medically stable,” the statement said. It further said that Imran “underwent optical coherence tomography, which showed clinical improvement.”

Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan also confirmed this in an interview. “Whatever the treatment, one of our concerns still remains unanswered,” Gohar said. He was referring to the demand of PTI which has been regarding Imran and his wife Bushra Bibi for a long time. These people have been talking about shifting to some other hospital and getting treatment “in the presence of family members and under the supervision of their personal doctors”.

“This is their fundamental right,” he said, adding that PTI has been demanding the implementation of this right for a long time.

The blame game between the party and the opposition has been going on for the last few months. The opposition has been continuously accusing the government of lack of transparency in this case, not providing proper treatment to Imran and not allowing him to meet his personal doctors. On the other hand, the government has been rejecting these allegations outright.

The opposition has also demanded that the former Prime Minister be shifted to Shifa International Hospital. According to jail officials, on April 17, Imran’s wife Bushra also underwent eye surgery at a hospital in Rawalpindi. The couple is still lodged in Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.
