Protection from strong sunlight and heat wave: Pregnant women should take special care in the increasing heat, keep these things in mind

New Delhi, May 12 (IANS). Becoming a mother is one of the most beautiful feelings in life, but during pregnancy, special care has to be taken of the health of both the mother and the baby. Even a little carelessness in food habits, weather and daily routine can increase the risk. Especially these days, when the heat is increasing across the country and heat wave is going on, then pregnant women should be even more careful.

According to the National Health Mission (NHM), many health risks can increase due to rising temperature during pregnancy. Both mother and child can be affected by strong sunlight, sweat, dehydration and fatigue, hence this season can be passed safely by taking proper care, balanced diet and adopting some important precautions. If we look at the important preventive measures for pregnant women-

Wear light and comfortable clothes:- Loose, cotton and light colored clothes should be worn in summer. This will keep the body exposed to air and sweat will dry easily.

Drink more water: – The risk of dehydration increases during pregnancy. It is very important to drink adequate amount of water throughout the day. Also take natural beverages like lemon water, coconut water or buttermilk. Along with keeping the body hydrated, it also provides essential electrolytes.

Avoid going out in the afternoon: – The intensity of sunlight and heat is highest between 12 noon and 4 pm. It is safest to stay indoors at this time. If it is necessary to go out, then definitely use umbrella, hat, glasses and scarf.

Eat a healthy diet:- Eat fresh fruits, vegetables, curd and home-made light meals. Avoid heavy, fried and spicy food.

Immediately pay attention to the symptoms: – If there is dizziness, severe headache, vomiting, nausea, extreme fatigue or any discomfort in the stomach, contact the doctor immediately. These symptoms should not be ignored.

Health experts say that a pregnant woman should have complete arrangements for rest. Family members should also play an active role in their care. Getting regular checkups done and following doctor’s advice becomes even more important in this season. With a little caution and proper care, both mother and baby can be kept safe in this summer season.
