New Delhi, December 30 (IANS). The harsh cold of winter, dense fog, cold wave and biting winds have made the condition of the people miserable. In this season, due to weakening of immunity, people often suffer from cold, cough and fever. The good thing is that the fruits available in this season provide warmth, adequate nutrition and strong immunity to the body from within. In Ayurveda, seasonal fruits are considered a boon for health.

The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India highlights the importance of seasonal and fresh fruits. According to the ministry, “eat fresh, eat seasonal”. In Ayurveda, special emphasis is given to the fact that fruits of the right season are easily digested and are full of life energy. Instead of processed snacks or junk food, choose local and seasonal fruits, which provide natural vitamins, fiber and hydration.

According to Ayurveda, seasonal fruits are a boon for health as they grow in harmony with nature. By eating fruits according to the season, the body’s defects (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) remain balanced. These fruits, being ripe and fresh, are rich in nutrients, easily digested and provide nutrition to the body as per the needs of the season. For example, to protect against cold and dry weather in winter, fruits containing Vitamin C increase immunity, fight infections and keep the body warm. Fruits of other seasons contain more pesticides and less nutrition, whereas seasonal fruits are naturally sweet, juicy and full of medicinal properties.

Regular consumption of seasonal fruits improves digestion, makes skin glow, controls weight and maintains energy. The major seasonal fruits of winter are Orange and Kinnow, which is a treasure trove of Vitamin C. It protects against cold and boosts immunity. Guava is rich in fiber and vitamin C, which improves digestion and controls blood sugar. Amla is also called a superfood in Ayurveda, which is rich in antioxidants, excellent for hair-beauty and detox.

At the same time, pomegranate improves blood circulation and maintains good heart health. Low in calories, rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, strawberries are beneficial for skin and immunity. Apart from this, grapes, apple, pear and kiwi, carrot and tomato are also beneficial for the body. These provide hydration, fiber and minerals, maintaining energy in the cold.

Ayurveda advises to eat these fruits fresh. Make juice or mix it in salad and eat it in the morning or afternoon. Fruits should not be consumed at night. Avoid processed juices.
