New Delhi, June 21 (IANS). Sleep is very important for good health. To stay healthy, one should take about 7 to 9 hours of sleep daily, but the problem starts when the sleep is not less but more than required. If a person sleeps 10 hours or more every day and still feels tired, then this is not normal.
Children, teenagers, pregnant women, or people recovering from illness may have slightly higher sleep needs, but in healthy adults, chronically excessive sleep may be a sign of an underlying problem.
Scientific research shows that sleeping excessively can reduce body activities. When a person spends more time in bed, it increases the chances of gaining weight. If this continues for a long time, the body’s metabolism may also slow down. Apart from this, many people feel heaviness, lethargy and headache even after sleeping too much.
Doctors say that excessive sleep can sometimes be a sign of some internal health problem. Some sleep-related disorders such as sleep apnea, brain-related sleep problems, or restlessness in the body can disrupt sleep frequently. For this reason a person feels tired even after sleeping for a long time. Apart from this, irregular daily routine, constant stress, wrong eating habits, excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption can also disturb the sleep pattern.
In some cases, this condition may also be related to hormonal changes in the body or chronic diseases. Like thyroid problems, blood sugar imbalance or some nervous system related diseases also force a person to sleep more. Therefore, if a person’s sleep suddenly increases or he continues to feel tired for a long time, it should not be ignored.
Doctors advise that if symptoms like loud snoring, difficulty in breathing, sudden weight gain or weak memory are seen along with excessive sleep, then immediate examination should be done.
