New Delhi, December 9 (IANS). Cold hands and feet, frequent cold, headache and joint pain are common complaints during winter season. These problems can be overcome by including Yogasana and Pranayam in daily routine. The practice of Suryabhedan Pranayam is very beneficial in winter.
According to the experts of Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, the most effective and simple solution is Suryabhedan Pranayam. This pranayama rapidly increases the internal temperature of the body, which helps in getting relief from cold. This is called the pranayama that activates the ‘Surya Nadi’ (Pingala Nadi), which is done through the right nostril.
Practicing Suryabhedan Pranayam provides many benefits. It provides relief from cold, nasal congestion and sinus problems. It is very effective in headache and migraine. This provides relief from joint pain, arthritis and back pain caused by Vata dosha. It strengthens the digestive system by destroying stomach worms (parasites). Whereas, it protects from cold by increasing the internal temperature of the body. This pranayama helps in Kundalini awakening and mental concentration.
Experts give detailed information about Suryabhedan Pranayam practice. For this, sit in Sukhasana, Padmasana or any comfortable posture. Close the left nostril with the thumb and take a deep breath slowly through the right nostril. After inhaling, close both the nostrils and hold for a few seconds. After this, exhale slowly through the left nostril. This is a cycle. 10-15 cycles should be done daily in the morning on an empty stomach.
Yogacharyas say that doing Suryabhedan Pranayam for 10-15 minutes every morning in winter keeps the body warm, strengthens immunity and keeps seasonal diseases away. However, some people are also advised to abstain. High blood pressure patients, heart patients, people with heat or pitta nature as well as those suffering from high fever should also avoid the practice of Suryabhedana Pranayam.
