Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar leads Yoga Day celebrations

Coimbatore, June 21 (IANS). Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar on Sunday inaugurated the 12th International Yoga Day celebrations at Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), Coimbatore. He along with hundreds of students, teachers and general public participated in this global day dedicated to physical and mental health.

People of different age groups enthusiastically participated in this program organized under the nationwide International Yoga Day programme.

The function included group yoga demonstrations, awareness sessions and interactive activities aimed at highlighting the benefits of yoga in daily life.

Addressing the gathering, Governor Arlekar stressed on the growing importance of Yoga in the modern society and said that it should not be seen merely as a physical exercise but as a comprehensive way of life. He said that yoga provides a holistic approach to health by promoting harmony between body, mind and spirit, allowing a person to live a healthy and balanced life.

The Governor stressed the need to increase awareness of Yoga across Tamil Nadu and encouraged educational institutions, community organizations and local bodies to actively promote its practice. He said that regular yoga practice can play an important role in improving overall health, reducing stress and enhancing mental strength in today’s fast-paced world.

Throwing light on the theme of this year, he said that the objective of the festival is not only to increase the lifespan but also to improve the healthy life span. He said that yoga can contribute significantly to this goal by encouraging preventive health care and promoting physical fitness and emotional well-being.

Students and teachers of Tamil Nadu University participated in a series of yoga sessions conducted by trained instructors. The program also showcased various yoga asanas and breathing techniques designed to improve flexibility, concentration and overall health.

Participants described the event as an opportunity to reconnect with India’s ancient health traditions and reinforce the importance of a healthy lifestyle. The university campus was the ideal location for the festival, where organizers emphasized the connection between physical health, environmental awareness and sustainable lifestyles. The International Yoga Day celebrations at TNAU concluded with a fresh call to incorporate yoga into one’s daily routine, reflecting a broader national effort to promote healthier and more conscious lives through this timeless practice.
