New Delhi, April 13 (IANS). In Indian tradition, utmost importance has been given to complete purification of body, mind and soul since ancient times. Taking this tradition forward, the ancient form of yoga, Shatkarma Yogasana, remains the basis of health for many people.
Its regular practice not only purifies the body but also keeps the mind calm. This yoga practice is a set of six yogic purity practices of Hatha Yoga, which are mentioned in the ancient texts of yoga. Regularly performing these six purification procedures of Hatha Yoga not only cleanses the body internally but also makes the mind calm and clear and increases the energy of the soul.
Shatkarma is a group of six major purification practices of yoga, which are mentioned in Hathayoga Pradipika, Gheranda Samhita and other ancient yoga texts. Their main purpose is to remove toxins, mucus and waste from various parts of the body. These six actions are called Neti, Dhauti, Basti, Nauli, Tratak and Kapalbhati.
According to the Hatha Yoga Pradipika (authored by Swami Swatmaram), the Shatkarmas (six purifying actions) are the key techniques for purifying the body and mind, balancing the Kapha, Pitta and Vata doshas. The main purpose of these exercises is to prepare the body for asanas and pranayama, especially for those whose body is suffering from kapha or meda (obesity).
With its regular practice, the body remains fit and also progresses at the mental-spiritual level. This is the most effective method of internal cleansing of the body. Additionally, it removes toxins from the body and plays an important role in calming the mind.
According to Hatha Yoga Pradipika, if one does not have excess phlegm or fat in his body, then he does not need to practice these activities. These exercises should be done only under the guidance of a qualified guru.
