New Delhi, May 23 (IANS). Nowadays people use various beauty products to get glowing and healthy skin, but external glow alone is not a sign of good skin. If your skin’s pH is balanced, it is a sign of health. When the pH level of the skin deteriorates, problems like dryness, irritation, acne, allergies and premature aging begin.
Actually, pH tells how acidic or alkaline something is. It is measured on a scale of 0 to 14. If the pH of something is 7 then it is considered normal. Levels below 7 are considered acidic and above 7 are considered alkaline.
According to scientists, the natural pH of human skin is slightly acidic. Generally it is considered better between 4.5 to 5.5. For this reason, a thin protective layer remains on the skin, which is called skin barrier. This layer works to protect the skin from bacteria, dust, pollution and harmful elements.
Doctors say that if the pH of the skin is balanced, the skin remains moist and the skin becomes soft, but when this balance starts deteriorating, then the problems gradually start increasing. Too much soap, face wash with strong chemicals or washing the face repeatedly causes the skin’s natural oil to reduce. Due to this the skin can become dry and sensitive. On the other hand, in some people, excessive oil production starts, which can increase the problem of acne and pimples.
According to medical research, things like age, weather, diet and stress also affect skin pH. In summer, sweat and sunlight affect the skin, while in winter the skin can become more dry. Apart from this, lack of sleep and wrong eating habits can also weaken the protective layer of the skin. Many times, without understanding, people start using products whose pH is not right for the skin. Due to this, problems like burning sensation, redness and itching can start on the face.
According to dermatologists, there are some signs which can show that the skin balance is deteriorating. If after washing the face the skin feels very stretched, there is frequent itching, the skin suddenly becomes too oily or very dry, or pimples start appearing on the face frequently, then this can be a sign of worsening of pH balance. In such cases, it is considered better to consult a doctor.
Sunlight can also affect the pH of the skin. That’s why experts recommend applying sunscreen daily. Apart from this, drinking enough water, eating nutritious food and getting good sleep are also considered important for healthy skin.
