New Delhi, April 19 (IANS). Appearance of small black dots on the skin of feet has become a common problem nowadays. People often consider it to be the result of wrong shaving, but according to science, there are many other reasons behind it. Due to these reasons, an effect like strawberry legs starts appearing on the skin, in which the skin of the legs, despite being clean, appears to have dots.
According to dermatologists, a major reason for this is blockage of pores. There are small hair follicles in the skin of our feet, from which hair emerges. When dust, sweat, oil and dead skin cells accumulate in them, these pores start getting clogged. On coming in contact with air, the substances deposited inside get oxidized and start appearing like small black dots.
Apart from this, dry skin also plays a big role in increasing this problem. When there is lack of moisture in the skin, its upper layer becomes rough. In such a situation, the skin gets more affected due to shaving or rubbing of clothes. On dry skin, hair follicles get easily blocked, making the dots more clearly visible.
Another scientific cause is also considered to be keratosis pilaris. In this, a protein called keratin starts getting produced in excess in the skin, which clogs the hair pores. This condition often appears as small raised bumps on the arms and legs. Many people ignore it considering it to be normal dryness, but this can further aggravate conditions like strawberry legs.
Not only shaving, but frequent rubbing of the skin is also a big reason. Wearing very tight clothes, excessive sweating and frequent friction puts pressure on the skin pores. This can cause irritation and slight swelling, which later appears as dark dots. Similarly, wrong scrubbing or hard exfoliation can also worsen the condition by damaging the upper layer of the skin.
