Agartala, March 31 (IANS). Agartala’s Government Govind Ballabh Pant Medical College and Hospital has successfully performed two consecutive kidney transplants for the first time in the history of the state. Officials gave this information on Tuesday.

Hospital Superintendent Dr. Bidhan Goswami said that this achievement has been possible due to the efforts of Chief Minister Manik Saha, who is himself a dental surgeon and is handling the health department.

With the completion of the sixth and seventh kidney transplants on Monday and Tuesday, a total of 7 successful kidney transplants have now taken place in this medical college and hospital.

In all cases, the condition of both the donor and the patient is said to be stable and good.

Both the recent transplants were done under the supervision of specialist doctors from Agartala Government Medical College and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital. In this, the cooperation of experts from a private hospital and research institute located in Imphal, Manipur was also taken.

Dr. Goswami said that earlier transplants were done separately, but for the first time, two successful transplants have been done in two consecutive days in the state, which is a new record.

On Monday, a 36-year-old man from Baikhora in South Tripura underwent a kidney transplant, with the kidney donated to him by his 33-year-old childhood friend.

On Tuesday, a 33-year-old man from Champaknagar in West Tripura underwent a kidney transplant after his 59-year-old father donated it.

According to the hospital administration, all the donors and patients are currently stable and under the supervision of doctors.

These operations were performed by a team of doctors from the departments of Nephrology, Urology and Anesthesia, with the support of experts from Manipur.

Dr. Goswami said that nursing staff and operation theater technicians also played an important role in this process.

The sixth transplant started on Monday morning and was completed in about 6 hours, while the seventh transplant started on Tuesday morning and was completed in about 5 hours.

Officials say this achievement reflects the state government’s strong commitment to improving health services.

It is noteworthy that the first kidney transplant in Tripura was done on 8 July 2024, while the fifth transplant was done successfully on 4 November 2025.

Meanwhile, the Tripura government has sought guidance and cooperation from AIIMS, New Delhi for expanding advanced health services in the state.

In June last year, a four-member team led by M. Srinivas, Director of AIIMS, New Delhi, had visited Agartala Government Medical College, Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital and other government health institutions to assess the health facilities in the state. This visit was done on the request of Chief Minister Manik Saha.
