New Delhi, 11 September (IANS). Whenever we talk about the heart, the first part of the mind comes in our chest. He does his work tirelessly on the day or night. Blood gives speed to life by pumping. But do you know that there is another ‘heart’ in the body, which is no less important for our health? And this heart is in our feet – the muscles of our dead calves, which are called Kalf Muscles in English.
These Kalf muscles are often called ‘second heart’ in medical science. But why?
Actually, our heart works to deliver blood throughout the body, but when the blood reaches the lower parts of the body, especially in the feet, it has to work hard to return to the heart. This task is not easy, because gravity means gravity always draws blood down.
This is where the role of the calves begins. When we walk, run, or just shake the legs, the muscles of the calf shrink. This shrinkage makes pressure on the veins and in a way ‘pump’ the blood upwards – the same way the heart beats and pumps blood. This process is called ‘muscle pump mechanism’ (CMP), and that is why these muscles have been called “second heart”.
A large population of Mayo Clinic (published in June 2024) found that those who had low functionality of CMP had higher mortality rates. The study saw that the lack of CMP became the root of many diseases. According to a research paper published in the world’s largest medical library ‘National Library of Medicine’ in 2020, if the CMP does not work properly, then you can get caught in many diseases and can also be a heart attack.
Working properly this other heart is very important for our health. If it does not function properly, blood starts to freeze in the feet, which can cause swelling, heaviness, pain and varicose nerves. When we do not shake the legs in the event of sitting or standing for a long time, these problems increase further. In addition, the risk of blood clots also increases when blood circulation is obstructed, which can prove to be fatal by reaching the lungs or hearts.
Next time you walk, race or climb the stairs, you must stop and keep an eye on the feet and thank them and thank them because they not only increase you further, but also share the burden of heart!
