Patna, 27 December (IANS). With the beginning of the year 2026, Bihar will get the gift of two more new medical colleges. With this the number of medical colleges in the state will increase to 15. At present 13 medical colleges are running in 11 districts.

Health department officials said that the completed Medical College and Hospital in Mahua, Vaishali and Veer Kunwar Singh Medical College and Hospital in Bhojpur, Arrah will start operating in January. The capacity of both these medical colleges will be 500-500 beds. Their cost is Rs 500 crore and Rs 543 crore respectively.

Along with this, it was also told that 100-100 UG students will be given admission in both these medical colleges. There will be hostel buildings for all the students and accommodation facilities for doctors and staff.

Both the medical colleges and hospitals operating in Bhojpur and Vaishali will be operated as per the National Medical Council (NMC) norms with core facilities such as General Medicine, Surgery, Paediatrics, Gynecology and ICU. In both these medical colleges, facilities for indoor, outdoor, testing, medicines etc. will be available for the patients. Along with this, other necessary facilities along with equipment will be implemented in demo room, museum, optosi block.

Till 10 years ago, there were only six government medical colleges in Bihar, which included Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH), Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH), Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) Muzaffarpur, Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) Darbhanga, Magadh Medical College Gaya and Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital Bhagalpur. Within the recent decade, the number of medical colleges has increased to 13 in 11 districts of the state.

At present, the districts where medical colleges are running include Jannayak Karpuri Thakur Medical College and Hospital (JNKTMCH) Madhepura, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC) Bettiah, Bhagwan Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences (BMIMS) Pawapuri (Nalanda), Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC, Chapra) Saran, Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) Purnia, Shri Ram Janaki Medical College and Hospital (GMC) Purnia, Hospital (SRJMCH) Samastipur, Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) Darbhanga, Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) Patna, Nalanda Medical College and Hospital (NMCH) Patna, Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) Patna, Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital (ANMMCH) Gaya, Shri Krishna Medical College and Hospital (SKMCH) Muzaffarpur and Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital (JNMC) Bhagalpur.

Health department officials say that in the remaining districts also, the construction work of one medical college each will be completed within the next five years. In Siwan and Begusarai, about 45-50 percent work of construction of medical colleges has been completed and in Buxar, Madhubani etc. districts, 60-80 percent work has been completed.
