Why does morning sickness occur during pregnancy? Understand from Ayurvedic perspective

New Delhi, November 21 (IANS). Women often suffer from morning sickness in the initial months of pregnancy. This is common and found in most women. The body is adjusting to new hormonal changes, the digestive fire becomes unstable and emotions become sensitive. Nausea intensifies when the stomach is empty and the smell of certain food items causes restlessness.

From a scientific point of view, the HCG hormone increases rapidly and it activates the vomiting center of the brain. Nausea also increases due to low blood sugar and increased sensitivity to smell. Symptoms include vomiting upon waking up in the morning, bitter taste in the mouth, dizziness, fatigue, feeling like a mild fever and heartburn.

According to Ayurveda, its main reason is aggravation of Pitta dosha and instability of mind. It can be reduced to a great extent with Ayurveda and home remedies. The most effective is ginger. Drinking light ginger water or chewing ginger as soon as you wake up in the morning improves digestion and prevents nausea.

Lukewarm water with lemon and honey also provides relief. Lemon calms pitta and honey gives energy. However, if there is a burning sensation in the stomach, reduce the consumption of lemon. Plus, the aroma of cardamom provides instant relief. Chew it or take cardamom water twice a day. These remedies are light and safe and can be easily carried while travelling.

Yoga and breathing are also helpful. Light pranayama techniques calm pitta, take slow deep breaths and meditate for 5 minutes in the morning. Avoid vigorous yoga asanas or jolting exercises, as nausea reduces only when the mind is stable.

Along with this, pay special attention to diet also. Do not eat too much fried, spicy or heavy food, eat in small portions, have a light breakfast as soon as you wake up in the morning and do not keep strong smells in the room. Lukewarm water is better, cold water can do harm.

Precautions are also necessary. In case of severe nausea, continuous vomiting, less urination, excessive fatigue, contact the doctor immediately. Mental balance is also important. Nausea increases as stress increases, so listen to calming music, take deep breaths and create a relaxing environment throughout the day.
