Why does slip disc occur? Know the causes and prevention methods from Ayurveda

New Delhi, January 22 (IANS). Nowadays the complaint of back pain has become very common and the biggest reason for it is slip disc. The reasons and remedies behind this have been explained in detail in Ayurveda.

In simple words, the intervertebral disc between the bones of our spine sometimes slips from its place or gets pressed, which puts pressure on the nerves. Its effect is seen in the form of pain, tingling or weakness in the back and legs. Ayurveda links it to conditions like Katigraha or Katishula and understands its causes to the dosha structure of the body.

Slip disc often occurs due to wrong habits and lifestyle. Sitting in the same position for a long time, especially while working on a computer or mobile, puts pressure on the bones of the spine. Improper lifting while lifting heavy objects can also cause a disc to slip.

Things like natural weakening of discs with age, obesity and excess weight on the body, injury or shock and muscle weakness further increase it.

In Ayurveda, its cause is considered to be imbalance of Vata dosha. When Vata dosha increases, the flexibility and tolerance of the body decreases. Due to this, the bones and discs of the spine become weak. To improve it from Ayurvedic point of view, it is not only necessary to reduce the pain but also to strengthen the flexibility and muscles of the body.

Some easy measures can be adopted for prevention. Avoid sitting for long periods of time and take a short walk every 30-40 minutes. Regular light exercise, stretching, yoga and pranayam like Bhujangasana, Makarasana and Shavasana keep the spine strong and stable. Ayurvedic oil massage and warm compresses also relax muscles and reduce pressure on nerves.
