New Delhi, March 8 (IANS). Periods or menstruation is not a disease, but a natural and normal process of women. By eating right, eating iron-rich food and taking adequate rest, one can get relief by reducing the fatigue, weakness and other discomforts occurring during these days to a great extent.
The National Health Mission (NHM) has appealed to women and adolescent girls to take special care of their health during periods. According to NHM, during this period blood is released from the body, which can lead to deficiency of iron and other nutrients. This may cause problems like fatigue, dizziness, weakness or anemia.
NHM says that it is very important to have a balanced diet these days. Include iron-rich foods like spinach, beetroot, pomegranate, jaggery, pulses, dry fruits, raisins, dates in your diet. These things compensate for blood deficiency and give energy to the body.
Also eat Vitamin C rich fruits like orange, lemon, amla, guava and tomato, because they help in absorbing iron in the body better. Foods like green vegetables, whole grains and curd also keep digestion healthy and reduce stomach cramps or bloating.
Avoid excessive tea, coffee or caffeine during periods, as these can prevent the absorption of iron. Adequate rest and sleep is equally important. During these days, the body feels more tired, so take good sleep for 7-8 hours. Exercise like light walking, yoga or pranayam also keeps the body relaxed and improves the mood. Avoid heavy work or stress.
Cleanliness is also important during periods. Use a clean pad or cloth, change it frequently and wash hands thoroughly. If pain or unusual symptoms occur, consult a doctor.
