Why is beauty sleep important? Know the miraculous benefits of Ayurveda

New Delhi, October 17 (IANS). In today’s busy life, people work hard throughout the day, but forget to get peaceful sleep at night. Using mobile till late night, work stress and irregular routine all these steal sleep. The result is that the face looks tired in the morning, dark circles, wrinkles and lifeless skin start appearing under the eyes.

It is said in Ayurveda that ‘Nidra Balam, Pushti, Gyanam, Sukham Cha Dadati.’ That is, good sleep gives strength, nutrition, knowledge and happiness to the body.

When we sleep at night, our body repairs itself. New skin cells are formed, collagen is produced and old cells are removed. This is the reason why good sleep is also called beauty sleep. If there is insufficient sleep, this process stops and wrinkles, lethargy and aging start appearing quickly on the face.

There are many benefits of sleep. Firstly, it increases the production of collagen, which keeps the skin tight and wrinkle-free. Sleep keeps the skin moisturized, whereas lack of sleep makes the face look dry. Blood circulation also improves while sleeping, due to which oxygen and nutrients reach the skin and the face looks fresh in the morning. Good sleep reduces stress hormones (cortisol), thereby maintaining skin elasticity.

Adults need at least 7-8 hours of sleep every day, teenagers 8-10 hours and children 10-12 hours. But, not just the quantity of sleep, its quality also matters. According to Ayurveda, one should sleep before 10 pm because at that time there is Kapha period, which helps in inducing sleep. Taking lukewarm milk or Triphala before sleeping calms the mind. Light lighting, calm atmosphere and balanced temperature in the room also improve sleep.

Some home remedies are also very effective, like drinking warm milk mixed with turmeric or nutmeg powder at night, applying mustard oil on the feet, and meditating or taking deep breaths before sleeping. It is equally important to stay away from mobile and caffeine.
