New Delhi, 4 October (IANS). Cuff syrup deaths are a very worrying topic, especially the case of death of children from Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan has shocked everyone. Dr. Dhiren Gupta, a pediatrician ICU co-director of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, spoke in detail on the issue.
He says that this is not a new problem. In India and other countries, there have been cases of phlegm syrup deaths for the last several years.
According to Dr. Gupta, the main problem is that the pharmacological grade ingredients for the use of humans are often replaced by cheap and low quality industrial grade ingredients. This provides poisonous elements like ethylene glycol in the syrup, which damages the kidney and causes kidney failure. In Kapha syrup, this poisonous substance sometimes takes such a serious form that it also leads to death of children.
Dr. Gupta said that Kapha syrup damages the child in three stages. After drinking the first syrup, there are problems like vomiting, stomach pain and diarrhea. In the second stage, crystals are formed in the kidney, causing the kidney failure. The third phase affects the brain. This process is very deadly.
Dr. Gupta also told that Kapha syrup is not needed many times. Cough is a natural process of the body, which works to remove things stuck in the throat or lungs.
According to Dr. Gupta, there are different measures for dry cough and wet cough, but most children have a blockage in the breathing passage behind cough, which is associated with diseases such as asthma. In such a situation, instead of pressing cough, attention should be paid to opening the path of breath.
Dr. Gupta has urged the government to strictly control the phlegm syrup and make the quality testing strict. Many times companies make phlegm syrup using cheap and inferior materials, causing heavy damage to the public. Apart from this, the general public should also be aware and should not consume cuff syrup without doctor’s advice.
