World Liver Day 2026: 'Good habits, healthy liver', adopt these habits to prevent diseases

New Delhi, April 18 (IANS). Liver is an important part of the body, but today’s irregular lifestyle along with other parts of the body is weakening the liver day by day. Serious problems like hepatitis B, hepatitis C and liver cancer are mainly caused by poor diet, alcohol, drugs, inactive lifestyle and lack of exercise.

World Liver Day is celebrated every year on 19 April with the aim of spreading awareness about the liver, an important organ of the body. On this occasion, many health organizations including health experts appeal to people to make them aware of liver diseases and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

Before adopting the habits to keep the liver healthy, it is important to know that it is an important part of the body. It filters blood, digests food, stores energy and helps keep the entire body balanced. Of all the organs of the body, the liver has the greatest ability to regenerate.

Experts say that today about one-third of the world is suffering from a problem called Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD). This condition is often associated with obesity, poor diet and wrong lifestyle. Initially it remains without any symptoms, but over time fat accumulation in the liver can cause fibrosis, cirrhosis and even liver cancer.

The theme of World Liver Day for the year 2026 focuses on “Good Habits, Healthy Liver”. It emphasizes four main habits that keep the liver healthy – a balanced diet, staying active, reducing alcohol consumption and getting regular checkups done.

Adopt a balanced diet:- Liver needs good nutrition. Eat a vegetarian diet of 2-3 fruits, green vegetables, whole grains, low-fat proteins and healthy fats daily. Avoid canned, junk food, processed food, excess sugar and unhealthy fats. Experts say that “diet is medicine”, this saying of the ancient Vedas is true even today.

Be active and exercise:- Regular physical activity prevents fat accumulation for the liver. Be it daily exercise, cycling, swimming, dancing or exercise, every type of activity strengthens the liver. Exercise can improve liver health.

Reduce alcohol intake:- Alcohol causes the most harm to the liver. Reducing or quitting alcohol consumption is the most effective way to prevent liver diseases.

Get regular checkups done:- Regular health checkups are necessary to detect liver problems even before symptoms appear. Especially people with diabetes, obesity or family history of liver disease should get their liver function test and Vitamin E tested as per doctor’s advice.

Health experts believe that apart from this, small changes in lifestyle like drinking enough water, getting good sleep, eating a balanced diet and including regular exercise in the daily routine can keep the liver healthy.
