World Oral Health Day: Teeth are 100 times better than brush, use from Neem to Jamun as per season.

New Delhi, March 20 (IANS). Along with body and mind, cleanliness of mouth also matters. World Oral Health Day is celebrated all over the world today, the aim of which is to increase awareness about oral health and link healthy mouth with health. On this occasion, it is important to consider the ancient tradition of Ayurveda, Datun, which is considered to be more effective than modern brushes.

The importance of Datun has been explained in detail in Maharishi Vagbhata’s book ‘Ashtang Hridayam’. In one verse it is said that cleaning the teeth removes bad smell, removes dirt from the tongue and teeth and brings freshness to the taste. Toothpaste is not just a means of cleaning teeth, but is also beneficial for the entire body. Datun made from natural twigs makes teeth shiny, takes care of gums and is also helpful in preventing many diseases.

Maharishi Vagbhata has said that twigs with bitter or astringent taste are better for toothache. Neem is prominent because it is the most bitter, but madar is considered even better. A total of 12 tree branches have been suggested in the book. These include Neem, Madar, Acacia, Arjun, Mango, Guava, Jamun, Mahua, Karanj, Banyan, Apamarg and Ber. Apart from these, rosewood and bamboo are also mentioned.

Ayurvedacharya advises to choose Datun according to the season. It is appropriate to use Neem, Madar or Acacia sprigs from Chaitra month till summer. In winter, brushing your teeth with guava or jamun, while in rainy season with mango or Arjuna sprig is said to be beneficial.

Neem toothpaste has antibacterial properties, which remove plaque and bacteria, relieve swelling and bleeding gums and eliminate bad breath. Elements like Nimbin, Margosin are found in Neem, which provide relief in the problem of pyorrhea and tooth decay. It is especially advisable for pregnant women to brush their teeth with a fresh branch of Neem in the morning and evening, which also has a positive effect on the baby. Acacia’s teeth reduce phlegm and bile and are also beneficial in blood related problems. The gum present in it prevents diarrhea, lung diseases, premature loss of teeth, bleeding gums and mouth ulcers. Regular use keeps the mouth healthy.

Arjuna twig contains crystalline lactone, which provides relief from diseases like heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and TB. Mahua (honey) calms vata-pitta, prevents skin-urinary tract problems and removes weakness of teeth, bleeding and dry mouth. Banyan tree’s tannic element helps in improving eyesight and removes pregnancy problems. Apamarga destroys stones, respiratory and skin diseases due to its alkaline properties. Karanj provides relief from piles, digestive problems and stomach worms. Plum relieves mouth problems like sore throat, excessive discharge during periods, cough and blood disorders.

Ayurvedacharya says that Datun should be 6-8 inches long. Make a fine grater and use it. It is best to floss in the morning and evening. While doing Datun, sit in a squat position, so that the benefits reach the entire body. Do not use some teeth like Neem continuously for more than three months, take a break in between and use Manjan or another twig.
