Assam Congress leader and leader of opposition in the state Debabrata Saikia has condemned the murder of Tripura student Anjell Chakma in Dehradun and accused the Uttarakhand government over alleged statements by the state police that they had found no evidence of racial abuse.
Saikia told ANI that the incident reflected the failure of the MLAs and the administration. He accused the Uttarakhand government of hiding facts. Saikia said he would write a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting him to include the relevant passage in textbooks so that children can be made aware of the diverse and rich culture of India.
He said, “People from the North-East are considered foreigners all over India due to lack of information about the ethnic diversities of India… The police cannot deny this… This is due to the failure of the law makers and the administration… I have decided to write to the Prime Minister requesting him to add a paragraph in the textbooks explaining how the people of the North-East are different, how the South Indian people look and how India is a multi-caste society.”
Saikia further said “For some time, every textbook should have a colored map of India… I condemn this incident, and I also condemn the Uttarakhand government which is trying to hide the facts and say that it is non-racial…”.
Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Ajay Singh has formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the murder case of 24-year-old Tripura student Anjel Chakma.
