The year 2026 has started with very good news for Indian travelers. According to the latest report of Henley Passport Index, the ranking of Indian passport has improved. India has now moved up to 80th position along with Algeria in the global rankings, which is an improvement from last year’s 85th position. This reform simply means that now Indian citizens can travel to 55 countries of the world without obtaining a prior visa. This change is the result of gradual reforms and improving diplomatic relations with other countries, making it easier than ever for Indians to travel abroad or do business.

Meaning of improvement in ranking of Indian passport

India’s ranking at 80th position in the Henley Passport Index shows that the strength of the Indian passport is growing. Although it is not yet near the top ranking countries, moving from 85 to 80 is a positive sign. Its biggest benefit will be available to those people who want to go abroad for holidays, business trips or to study for a short period. Indians now have more options for visa-free travel compared to neighboring countries, providing greater flexibility in travel planning.

What is the difference between visa-free, visa-on-arrival and ETA?

Travelers often get confused between ‘visa-free’ and ‘visa-on-arrival’. Visa-free means you do not need any visa before travelling, or at the airport; Simply show your passport and gain entry. Whereas, in Visa-on-Arrival, after reaching the airport of the destination country, you have to fill a form and pay the fee, after which you get entry. Additionally, Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is an online process that needs to be completed a few days before embarking on the journey. This is not a full visa, but you cannot fly without it.

Apart from this, before traveling to any country, definitely check the official website of the embassy there, because the rules can change anytime. Apart from passport, Voter ID card can also be used to go to Nepal. To make your journey pleasant, check the validity of your passport (at least 6 months).
