The hope of restarting Sasamusa Sugar Mill, which was closed for years in Gopalganj district of Bihar, has now become stronger. In a high level meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Pratyaya Amrit on Thursday, Karnataka company Nirani Sugars Limited has shown keen interest in running this mill. The government has also directed the officials to remove all the technical and administrative hurdles related to the mill as soon as possible so that it can be started within the stipulated time.

What was decided in the meeting?
The Chief Secretary has given strict instructions to the Sugarcane Industry and Energy Department in this review meeting held through video conferencing. He has said that the problems related to electricity or machinery in starting the mill should be resolved on priority basis. Nirani Sugars MD Vishal Nirani, who was present in the meeting, has given positive indications for the revival of the mill. Let us tell you that this is the same group which has already successfully restarted the Riga Sugar Mill of Sitamarhi.
What will be the impact on farmers and employment?
Thousands of sugarcane farmers in Gopalganj and Saran areas currently have to depend on distant mills like Sidhwalia or Harkhua to sell their crops, which increases their transportation expenses. Farmers will directly benefit from the opening of Sasamusa Mill. Apart from this, the government believes that starting industries at the local level will reduce migration to Gulf countries. Small businesses like transport and machinery will also get a boost once the mills restart.
