New Delhi. Senior Congress leader, former Union Home Minister and former Speaker of Lok Sabha Shivraj Patil passed away today. He was 91 years old and was ill for a long time. He was a seven-time MP from Latur Lok Sabha seat in Maharashtra. When the terrorist attack took place in Mumbai in 2008, Shivraj Patil was the Home Minister in the Central Government, he resigned from the post after this incident. On the death of Patil, MPs in the Lok Sabha paid tribute to him by observing a minute’s silence. Many other leaders including President Draupadi Murmu and PM Narendra Modi have expressed grief over his demise.

President Draupadi Murmu said, we have lost an eminent public personality with the demise of senior politician Shivraj Patil. In his long public career, he held many important positions including Speaker of the Lok Sabha, Union Minister, Governor and long-term MP. My heartfelt condolences to his family, well-wishers and fans.

While posting an old photo of himself with Shivraj Patil on social media, Prime Minister Modi has written, I am deeply saddened by his demise. He was an experienced leader who served as MLA, MP, Union Minister, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker and Lok Sabha Speaker in his long public career. He was extremely dedicated to contributing to social welfare. I have had several contacts with him over the years, the most recent of which was when he visited my residence a few months ago. My condolences to his family in this hour of grief, Om Shanti. Congress MPs, led by Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, paid tribute to former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil.
