New Delhi. Delhi riots accused and former JNU student Umar Khalid has got a big relief in the form of interim bail. Umar Khalid had filed a petition seeking interim bail to attend his sister’s wedding, which has been approved by the court. Karkardooma Court has granted interim bail to Umar Khalid from December 16 to December 29, although some conditions have also been imposed on the bail. The court has given clear instructions to Umar Khalid that during the bail period he will neither use social media nor contact any witness.
Karkardooma Court has allowed Omar to meet only his family members, relatives and friends. The court has approved the interim bail petition with a personal bond of Rs 20,000 and two sureties of Rs 20,000 each. The court has directed Umar Khalid to surrender on the evening of 29 December. Umar had said in the petition filed in the court that his sister’s marriage is to be held on December 27 and his presence in it is important. Karkardooma Court has granted interim bail to Omar at a time when the Supreme Court has reserved its decision on the bail plea of Omar Khalid, Sharjeel Imam and other Delhi riots accused a day earlier.
Earlier during the hearing, the ASG had opposed his bail plea and said that when intellectuals become terrorists, they become more dangerous. Umar Khalid is accused of conspiring in the Delhi riots. Delhi Police arrested Umar Khalid in September 2020. A case has been registered in this matter under UAPA (Unlawful Activities Prevention Act). A year ago, in December 2024, Umar Khalid was granted interim bail for 7 days to attend his cousin’s wedding.
