New Delhi. After the death sentence to former Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina, incidents of protest and violence are taking place in Bangladesh. At the same time, the international community is also not in favor of sentencing death sentence to Sheikh Hasina. The United Nations Human Rights Council UNHRC has expressed concern over the sentencing of Sheikh Hasina. The UNHRC has expressed its opposition to the death sentence of Sheikh Hasina, emphasizing the standards of due process and fair trial. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Amnesty International are also against the death sentence to Sheikh Hasina.
Raveena Shamdasani, spokesperson at the Geneva office of UNHRC High Commissioner Volker Turk, said that the death penalty decision against Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was the Home Minister in her government, is important for the victims of serious human rights violations committed during the suppression of the movement in Bangladesh in 2024. Shamdasani has also expressed his protest against the death sentence awarded to Sheikh Hasina and Kamal. At the same time, Stephane Dujarric, spokesperson for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, said that the organization is against the death penalty. Dujarric supported the statement of UNHRC High Commissioner Volker Turk.
On the other hand, human rights organization Amnesty International has opposed the death sentence awarded to Sheikh Hasina by the Bangladesh tribunal. Amnesty has alleged that the proceedings in the Bangladesh tribunal against Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal were not fair and just. Sheikh Hasina has already termed the allegations and punishment imposed on her as wrong. After the students’ movement in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina and her sister came to India to save their lives on 5 August 2024. India has given asylum to Sheikh Hasina and her sister. At the same time, the interim government of Bangladesh is continuously demanding the extradition of Sheikh Hasina. After Sheikh Hasina was sentenced to death, Bangladesh has again demanded her extradition. At the same time, India’s Foreign Ministry has said that being a neighbour, India is committed to the interests of the people of Bangladesh. This includes peace, democracy, inclusiveness and stability in Bangladesh. India has said that for this it will remain constructively engaged with all the stakeholders.
