A tragic incident has come to light in Ufa city of Russia where four Indian medical students have been attacked with a knife. The incident took place on Saturday, February 7, 2026, in the hostel of Bashkir State Medical University. The attacker was a 15-year-old local boy who entered the hostel and targeted the students. The Indian Embassy has confirmed the incident and called it extremely unfortunate.

What is the whole matter and the condition of the students?
The attack took place in the sports hall of the university’s International Students Hostel. According to reports, the attacker was allegedly associated with a banned organization and also raised slogans there. A total of four Indian students have been injured in this attack. According to the information of the Russian Health Ministry, the condition of one of these students is still critical, while the condition of the remaining three is said to be moderate.
Police and security forces took action on the spot. Two policemen were also injured during the attack. The attacker has been taken into custody, but is also hospitalized due to self-harm and injuries sustained during the arrest. The Russian Investigative Committee has started an in-depth investigation into the matter.
Action of Indian Embassy and Administration
The Indian Embassy in Moscow became active as soon as information about the incident was received. Officials from the Indian Consulate in Kazan have been immediately sent to Ufa to meet the injured students and the university administration. The All India Medical Students Association (AIMSA) has appealed to the Government of India to increase security for students studying in Russia and start an emergency helpline.
Under university rules, all foreign students are required to have medical insurance, which is expected to cover medical expenses. The city of Ufa is about 1200 kilometers away from Moscow and a large number of Indian students live here due to the low cost of education and living. Currently, security has been increased around the university and hostels.
