The Delhi High Court on Tuesday sought response from the central government and web series makers on a plea to stop the release of web series ‘UP 77’, allegedly based on the life of gangster Vikas Dubey. This petition has been filed by the wife of Dubey, who was killed in the encounter.
The web series is scheduled to release on OTT platform ‘Waves’ on December 25.
Justice Sachin Dutta issued notice on the petition and scheduled the matter for further hearing on Wednesday.
Dubey was killed in an encounter with Uttar Pradesh Police in 2020. According to the state police, Dubey, the main accused in the murder of eight policemen in Kanpur, had surrendered in Ujjain in Madhya Pradesh and was being brought from Ujjain to Kanpur when the vehicle carrying him overturned and Dubey allegedly tried to escape. During this time he was killed in a police encounter.
Dubey’s wife appealed to the High Court to stay the release of the film. However, the court said it would hear both sides on Wednesday and take a decision.
