Rain havoc in Kolkata: Railways, airline and metro services affected due to rain

Seven people have died due to heavy rains in Kolkata. Roads, railways and metro tracks were flooded due to continuous rains, affecting the transport network badly. Many cars got stuck in water and the school’s pool car services had to be canceled. Schools have advised parents to keep children at home. Work from Home has been implemented in many offices. Many puja pandals have been filled with rain water.

The most affected areas due to rain

Lake Market, Rashmibhari, Thantania, Patuli, Santoshpur Avenue, Park Circus, Nagarbazar and Bospukur Talbagan filled the water from knees to waist. The water reached the waist in Thantania, while the pandals were submerged after about five hours of continuous rains in Bospukur Talbagan. Railway services also had a huge impact. Howrah and Sealdah yard and car shades were flooded, causing several trains to be canceled by the Eastern Railway. Suburban services were limited and Sealdah South and Circular Railway Line remained completely closed.

IndiGo and Air India alert passengers

IndiGo and Air India have advised passengers to take extra time before going to the airport due to continuous heavy rains in Kolkata and flooding of roads.

IndiGo wrote on X, “Travel advice: Passengers of Kolkata pay attention! Many roads are running closed or slow due to today’s heavy rains.

Air India warned “Kolkata may have an impact today due to continuous and heavy rains. https://airindia.com/in/en/manage/flight-status.html Check your flight status and keep extra time due to traffic and waterlogging. ”

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee issued order

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee ordered to start a holiday of Durga Puja in all government schools from today and appealed to private schools to be closed for the next two days. Education Minister Bratyamo Basu said that all schools and higher education institutions will remain closed on September 24 and 25. Teachers and staff were requested to do the necessary work from home.

Trains canceled, metro service also affected

Eastern Railway canceled several trains due to waterlogging in Howrah Division. Metro service was also affected, the service was stopped between Shahid Khudiram and Maidan stations when the mid-section of the Blue Line (Dakshineswar-Shaheed Khudiram) was flooded. Train operations were postponed due to the track submergence in Sealdah South Section, while Limited Services is going on in Sealdah North and Main Section.

Universities canceled examination

Kolkata University has also postponed departmental examinations due to weather conditions and Jadavpur University has canceled all educational activities and meetings. America’s Kolkata Embassy also postponed services after heavy rains.

Union Minister Sukant Majumdar appealed to the state government, power distribution company and Kolkata Municipal Corporation to take immediate measures after the electrocution died due to electrocution, including shutting down power in water -filled areas and speeding up rescue operations.

Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim said that he never saw such water in his life. He said that many poor people and people living in school buildings are safe and food is being provided to them by the corporation and police stations. He hoped that if there is no more rain, the water will dry up by tonight.
