Amidst the ongoing tension in West Asia, the Indian government has achieved great success in the campaign to bring back its citizens safely. External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Saturday thanked Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and the government of Armenia for helping in the safe evacuation of Indian fishermen from Iran. This entire operation has been carried out using the routes of neighboring countries so that no Indian is harmed and they can reach their homes safely.

How many Indians have been evacuated from Iran so far?
According to the latest report of the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), more than 1,200 Indian citizens have been safely evacuated from Iran till 2 April 2026. The Government of India had chosen two main routes for this rescue operation. The government has repatriated its people with the help of Armenia and Azerbaijan. The withdrawal figures can be understood in detail in the table given below:

What is the government’s preparation regarding the rescue operation?
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal has informed that the Ministry is working closely with the Indian missions present in Armenia and Azerbaijan and the local authorities there. Stay and other necessary arrangements have been made to ensure that Indians do not face any problem during transit. A total of more than 6,24,000 people from across the West Asia region have returned to India since 28 February 2026. The government has made it clear that they are constantly monitoring the ground situation and all efforts have been made to ensure the safe return of every citizen.
