New Delhi. In the violence case in Ladakh’s capital Leh two days ago, the administration has arrested social activist Sonam Wangchuk, taking strict action. He has been arrested under the National Security Act. Mobile Internet service in Leh has been discontinued till further orders. Earlier on Thursday, the Union Home Ministry had canceled the FCRA license of Sonam Wangchuk’s NGO Students Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh with immediate effect. This action was taken due to alleged discrepancies in the accounts of NGOs.
It is being told that Sonam Wangchuk was about to hold a press conference this afternoon but before that he was arrested. On Wednesday, 4 people died in the violence erupted in Leh, while 90 people were injured. After this violence, the order to close all government and private schools, colleges and Anganwadi centers for 2 days was already given by the magistrate. Apart from Leh, Section 144 is also applicable in other cities including Kargil. Due to violence in Leh, Sonam Wangchuk had to end her hunger strike in the middle.
Sonam Wangchuk had said that I was being made a sacrifice of sacrifice when I was responsible for the protests. In fact, violence erupted during the bandh called by Leh Apex Body on Wednesday demanding the expansion of the sixth schedule for Ladakh and the status of full state. The protesters targeted several government buildings, vandalized government properties and also carried out arson incidents in many places. Since the violence, the police have taken around 50 people into custody.
