Delhi Police has detained five people in connection with the stone pelting incident that took place during the demolition drive conducted by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) near Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque at Turkman Gate.

According to police, around 25-30 people pelted stones at the police and MCD officials who arrived at Turkman Gate with JCB machines to demolish the illegal encroachment on court orders.

Five policemen suffered minor injuries in this incident. Central District Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Nidhin Valsan said that he was treated at a nearby hospital.

DCP Valsan said, “Last night, MCD staff came here with a JCB. We had informed the people about the court order. Around 150 people had gathered here. People were curious to know what was happening. We advised them to leave the place. 25-30 people started throwing stones at the police. We had to use force in retaliation. After pushing them back, we started vandalism. During the stone pelting, five “The policemen were injured. Their injuries are minor.”

He further said, “We have registered an FIR. Five people have been detained. The detained people are residents of Chandni Mahal area.”

Police have assured that action will be taken against the miscreants on the basis of evidence.

DCP Valsan further said, “We are also examining the footage of CCTV cameras, drone cameras were installed yesterday and videos are going viral on social media; we are investigating all these. Action will be taken against anyone found guilty.”

Meanwhile, BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal said that the demolition action is being taken as per the court order.

“This action was taken following the orders of the High Court…the entire action was taken as per law,” he said.

BJP leader Shahnawaz Hussain said the stone pelting incident was “extremely unfortunate” and added that illegally constructed structures would definitely be demolished.

“The illegally constructed structures will definitely be demolished, but the incident of stone pelting that happened there is extremely unfortunate. It is unacceptable anywhere in Delhi. It is regrettable and cannot be tolerated in Delhi,” he said.
