Severe cold is about to hit India once again. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of cold wave and dense fog in many parts of the country from December 9.
The effect of cold in North, Central and Eastern India is likely to continue till December 12. At the same time, dense fog can trouble the North-East and some eastern states for several days.
In which areas will the cold wave hit?

Visibility is expected to be very low in the early morning hours. IMD has asked people to take extra precautions while travelling.
Temperature trend in the country
In the last 24 hours, minimum temperatures were recorded below 5 degrees in many parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad and Himachal.
The temperature in Faridkot and Gurdaspur in Punjab reached 4.5°C—the lowest temperature in the plains.
Temperatures in West Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh were recorded much below normal.
Temperatures may increase by 1-2°C in North-West India, Madhya Pradesh and Gangetic West Bengal.
A drop of 1-2°C is expected in Gujarat, North-East and South Peninsular India.
What weather systems are active at the moment?
An upper air cyclone active over East Bangladesh and surrounding areas.
Western Disturbance remains over North Pakistan.
Easterly trough spread over south-east Bay of Bengal.
Sub-tropical westerly jet stream is passing over Northeast India with wind speed of 115 knots.
Another new Western Disturbance will affect the Western Himalayan region from December 13.
