Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju on Saturday urged the opposition not to discuss military operations to “gain fame and do politics”, and warned that it could have “serious consequences” on the future of the military leadership. Emphasizing that every member of the House must follow parliamentary rules, Rijiju commented on the opposition’s “irresponsible” behaviour.
“If every military operation and war will be discussed with the aim of gaining fame and doing politics, it will have a serious impact on the future military leadership. I have never seen such an irresponsible opposition leader. Every member should speak according to parliamentary rules,” he said in a post on X.
Rijiju was adding to his post on X, in which he had mentioned that the government is in possession of the Henderson Brooks-Bhagat report, which blamed Jawaharlal Nehru’s government for the “humiliating defeat at the hands of the Chinese PLA” in 1962.
Rijiju said, “Our government is headed by a mature leader. The Henderson Brooks-Bhagat Commission report has been kept secret since 1962. It blamed the Nehru government for the humiliating defeat it suffered at the hands of the Chinese PLA. Our government has never made it public because it is a defense matter which cannot be used as a political weapon.”
The development comes amid ongoing political tension after opposition leader Rahul Gandhi was prevented from quoting former Army chief General MM Naravane’s “unpublished memoir” during the motion of thanks on the President’s address in the Lok Sabha in the ongoing budget session of Parliament.
The opposition leader had attempted to cite the “memoir” while discussing the 2020 China standoff in eastern Ladakh, sparking a heated debate inside Parliament. BJP leaders argued that quoting the “unpublished work” was a violation of House rules and risked demoralizing the armed forces, leading to a fierce clash between the ruling party and the opposition.
