The financial condition of public representatives has always been a topic of discussion in Indian politics, but recent figures show that there has been a huge increase in the wealth of MPs in the last decade. According to the latest data, between 2014 and 2024, the wealth of MPs who have been re-elected to Parliament has registered an average increase of more than 100 percent. This simply means that within just ten years the wealth of many MPs has more than doubled.
Highest jump in the assets of veteran BJP MPs, the list includes many big names like Anurag Thakur, Nishikant Dubey and Giriraj Singh.
If we look at the figures, among the MPs whose wealth has increased the most, Bharatiya Janata Party leaders have the highest number. Names like Udayanraje Bhosle, Nishikant Dubey, Sameer Mahajan and PP Choudhary top this list. Apart from this, huge increase has also been recorded in the assets of former Union Ministers Giriraj Singh, Anurag Thakur and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. These figures show what kind of change has taken place in the economic condition of the public representatives during their stay in power.
Udayanraje Bhosale’s wealth increased from Rs 60 crore to Rs 223 crore, a huge jump of 268 percent in 10 years.
In terms of increase in wealth, the figures of Maharashtra’s prominent leader and MP Udayanraje Bhosale are surprising. In the year 2014, his wealth was around Rs 60 crore. Five years later, in the 2019 election affidavit, it increased to Rs 199 crore and by 2024, his total wealth touched the level of Rs 223 crore. That means, in the last ten years, his wealth has increased by approximately Rs 162 crore, which is an increase of 268 percent.
Record increase of 747 percent in assets of Jamnagar MP, wealth directly increased from Rs 17 crore to Rs 147 crore.
If seen in percentage terms, the figures of increase in wealth of BJP MP from Jamnagar are even more shocking. According to statistics, there has been a huge increase of Rs 130 crore in the wealth of MP Madhav in the last ten years. In 2014, his wealth was only Rs 17 crore, which increased to Rs 147 crore in 2024. This growth is 747 percent more than in 2014, which is more than the growth from any normal investment or source of income.
Increase of Rs 17 crore in the average assets of 102 MPs who won twice consecutively, serious questions are being raised on transparency and sources of income.
This trend of increase in wealth is not limited to the ruling party only, but a significant increase in the wealth of MPs from Congress and other opposition parties has also been seen. There are a total of 102 MPs who reached the Lok Sabha for two consecutive terms, and their average wealth has increased by Rs 17.36 crore. Such a rapid and huge increase in the wealth of MPs has raised questions on transparency and accountability in politics. Now the demand is gaining momentum that the sources of income and property of public representatives should be regularly and thoroughly investigated so that purity is maintained in democracy.
