The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) elected Yumnam Khemchand Singh as its legislature party leader during the Manipur Assembly meeting at its headquarters in Delhi. The decision was taken after a meeting held in the national capital this evening, days before the end of President’s rule in the northeastern state.
According to sources, after this meeting there will be a meeting of NDA allies in the state. President’s rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13 last year, which was extended by the Parliament for six months in August last year. Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Sunday said that NDA allies in the state have been called to Delhi for a meeting.
Biren Singh told reporters, “All NDA allies have been invited… A positive response is expected.” He further said, “Government formation is a continuous process. I am trying my best to bring a change in the situation in the state of Manipur.” President’s rule was imposed in Manipur on February 13, 2025, after N Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister following several months of intermittent violence in the state following ethnic tensions between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei ethnic groups.
The Union Home Ministry in December extended another deadline to the inquiry commission probing the caste violence in Manipur and directed it to submit its report “as soon as possible, but before May 20, 2026”. The commission has been tasked to investigate the caste violence that broke out in Manipur on May 3, 2023, investigate its causes and study the response of the authorities.
